About

The Office of Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) provides consultative services to faculty, staff, and students in areas which present risks to individuals and the University. By establishing policies and procedures, RMI is able to manage risk and control losses.

In addition, RMI manages the University's self-insurance funds, property and liability insurance programs, coverage administration, issuance of certificates of insurance, and participates in the emergency response system of the University.

  • Matt McCabe's Biography

    As Executive Director of the Office of Risk Management and Insurance, Matt McCabe is responsible for property and liability risks, self-insurance and insurance programs, actuarial services, loss control programs, claims administration and coordination of damage assessment for the University.  Prior to coming to MSU in 2007, he was the Risk Manager for Volkswagen of America.  He has more than 40 years of experience in risk management, insurance brokerage and casualty underwriting. He holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation and received his MBA from the University of Detroit and BA in Risk and Insurance from MSU.

  • Bobbi Boland's Biography

    Bobbi has been employed with Michigan State University since 1986 and with the Office of Risk Management and Insurance Department since 1997.  Bobbi holds a Bachelor's in Business Administration from Cleary University.  She also holds the Associate in Claims (AIC) designation from the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and the Certified Workers' Compensation Professional (CWCP) designation from the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.

    Areas of Responsibility:  contract review, litigated claims management, special events, risk assessment and review, and insurance policy renewals.

  • Jennifer Lafferty's Biography

    Jennifer joined the Office of Risk Management and Insurance in 2020 as a Risk Management Analyst, and transitioned into a Risk Management Administrator in 2024. She has been employed with Michigan State University since 2012, with her previous positions being in Sponsored Programs Administration and the Office of Sponsored Programs. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from Michigan State University, and a Master of Arts in Strategic Communications from Michigan State University along with a Digital Media Certificate.

    Areas of Responsibility: Department Fiscal Officer, property loss prevention, insurance policy renewals, insurance allocation, risk assessment and review, analysis and reporting, management of non-litigated auto liability and physical damage claims, MSU property loss claims and general liability claims, training and education, and website maintenance.

  • Marci Hicks' Biography

    Marci joined the Office of Risk Management and Insurance in February 2022.  She has been employed with Michigan State University since 2016, with her previous positions being in Accounting and Student Accounts within the Controller’s Office. She holds an Associate Degree of Business Administration from Lansing Community College. She also holds an Independent Insurance Adjuster License in the State of Michigan.
